Why is Manga considered a separate medium from comic books?

Comic Books
Human asked:

I’ve noticed people getting annoyed when Manga gets grouped in the same genre as comic books, or when bookstores sell anime alongside western animation.

Because it’s a completely different style. And it’s read completely different. Nope, not the same. And there not from the same side of the world.

It’s like saying Football and Rugby are the same.

a manga is usual un colored it made in japan it got the anime style drawing like the big eyes plus it in diffrent size and some people think manga is better than comics

i dont think that but sometimes they make movies base on a manga or anime and the movie sucks

The fact they there are drawings and text in the book is about the only thing manga and comic books have in common.

They’re not the same, they’re very different things, but they are the same medium, I don’t really see anything wrong with selling them together at all, and I don’t get angry when people assume they’re the same, I would have thought they were the same a year ago, some people just don’t know what manga is, it’s nothing to get upset about.

ugh i hate american comics and animation!
i went to an exhibit once, and tried to look at it without disgust. didn’t work, and that ruined my day, going into that exhibit.
Manga isn’t just the hero of the day type thing. I don’t like reading from right to left. It is so cheesy and fake, and none of it is funny. The drawing style is bad, the coloring is weird, and the setup of where the panels go is infuriating.
For me, it’s just really really bad. But I am an extreme manga lover because it is just so much better. I suppose I am biased, though, because I am asian and I love all Japanese things, basically.
And I definitely don’t get annoyed, I get mad when things like that happen. If someone says “manga”, except with a long “a”, I say that’s the american way and correct them. It’s automatic.
haha sorry for my total dislike of western comics. I am american, but i just hate the comics.
They’re just not the same, you know?

Well, manga is a type of comic. There are American, European, and other versions (like Batman), and the Japanese versions (that’s manga).
Manga is a totally different style and there are more erm.. types? of it. American comics tend to be more about, you know, superheroes. At least the more successful ones. Manga can be about romance, mystery, sexuality, anything. Manga readers also tend to be a different crowd than the comic readers. Not trying to be stereotypical here, though. I’m just trying to answer the question about why people get offended. Manga is more for sissies in the comic readers’ eyes, and comics aren’t interesting in the manga readers’ eyes. Typically. There are ALWAYS exceptions to the stereotypes.
Manga and comics are read differently, drawn differently, and written differently. In other words, they are just different. Like how a square is a type of rectangle, yet they are different. Same sort of idea… but different species.
    Hope I helped.

because its specifically from Japan. The arts different, the way its read is different and because in Japan, they take it more seriously then we would ever take comic

“Well, manga is a type of comic.”

hey is the only person who even got this remotely right. A comic is simply the format of telling a story through juxtaposed pictures - which includes manga. Manga is just a word used to describe the style of comics which come from Japan, which are USUALLY (but not always) uncolored, read right to left, and have a certain style of art, characterized by large eyes, elaborate hair and other elements.

“It’s like saying Football and Rugby are the same.”
They’re both sports. Football is just one example of a sport, just like manga is one example of a comic.
