What comic books or graphic novels are a good read?

Comic Books
Doogie asked:

I have been out of the comic book world for 15 years and a friend recommended Josh Whedon’s Astonishing X-men vol 1 - 4. I loved it and looking for more comic books that are just a fun read with great art. What do you recommend?

For just a good read if you never caught up with the French and the Belgians, Herge’s Tintin (especially the Seven Crystal Balls and its sequel Prisoners of the Sun or Destination Moon and its sequel Explorers on the Moon) are comic book classics. And I’ve seen some reprints of two volumes in one which bring those back together. Other French books sometimes available in translation are Asterix the Gaul, of course, Charlier and Giraud (Giraud is known in the US as Moebius)’s Fort Navajo, and Roger Leloup’s Yoko Tsuno. These are all graphic novels, some quite old some of the Leloup ones quite recent, which are all VERY entertaining and as good as comics ever get.

The Wolverine/Weapon X stories are other classics, as are Mike Mignola’s Hellboy — though I will admit I haven’t seen those lately. Spiegelman’s Maus and Joe Kubert’s Fax from Sarajevo are more serious work but also worth reading.

Some of the Manga is quite good. While I enjoy the Naruto anime, Bleach, as manga, is a better read. And I still see Akira around. That was a classic film — as good as any ever made ever. And the Manga is better.
